Ironman Race Report - The After (21 Months Later)

Considering I published "The During" 5 months after the race, I'll go ahead an post about "The After".

In hindsight, I had a concussion so the details may be a bit fuzzy.

My finish line celebration didn't last too long. I took some pictures and headed straight to the med tent which was full. No beds or chairs available! The heat had packed quite a punch on many participants, which made me thankful that I was still upright and at least managed to handle THAT challenge of the day. The volunteer nurse took my blood pressure and checked me out all while standing and suggested I go to the ER. Rather than take an ambulance to the one closest to the race site (which I had assumed was packed), I opted to get back to the car and have my crew drive me to the little hospital near our hotel.

We connected with Laurie and walked to her rental so she could drive us to the car. Then dropped off half of my support crew so they could get some rest.  Amanda drove me to the ER and we were there until 4 AM taking cat naps when possible.

Just a girl with a busted face sitting in an ER

I got x-rays and someone cleaned out my road rash. The doctor told me that I had fractured my cheek and there were multiple breaks  (zygomatic complex fracture).  Advised me not to fly and run the Ragnar Trail that I was supposed to do the following weekend because my eye socket was compromised and a fall on a trail could really jack me up (ok so I'm summarizing here).

It was quite a doozy.

The next morning, Amanda got some rest and Moe drove me to the Ironman store to buy my finisher gear and then to Thomas's Jewelry to pick up the MDot Crab necklace that they had put aside for me.

Once the running around was done, Lauren headed to the airport, Moe headed to Annapolis, and Amanda and I started the drive back to NY.  This is how the concussion was confirmed as I could not spend too much time on my phone in the car because... 🤮  That was fun.

I went to the maxillofacial surgeon the next day (Monday) and had surgery scheduled for Friday.
All went well. Dr. Karner fixed my face right up and I spent the next 6 weeks recovering.

Post Surgery

Combo congratulations/get well gifts.
I love my friends

So now I'm almost 2 years out and husband is training for IMLP.  Have to say I'm a little wistful...
Let's see what's next.
